Future Plans: Why Social Enterprise Is Central to Our Vision for Community Transformation

December 17, 2025

The challenges facing today’s communities—economic uncertainty, workforce gaps, and systemic inequities—cannot be solved by traditional methods alone. At Future Plans, we believe the future belongs to organizations that innovate boldly, collaborate widely, and measure impact rigorously. That’s why we are embracing the principles of social enterprise as a cornerstone of our strategy.

What Is Social Enterprise?

Social enterprise is more than a business model—it’s a philosophy that combines entrepreneurial thinking with mission-driven purpose. As David Wiley shared during the Appalachian Conference on Social Enterprise (ACOSE) at Shawnee State University, social enterprises create sustainable solutions by generating revenue while addressing deep-rooted social challenges.

This approach resonates with Future Plans because it aligns perfectly with our mission: empowering individuals and communities through workforce development and education. Social enterprise offers a framework for doing this work in a way that is scalable, sustainable, and impactful.

“Fall in Love with the Problem, Not the Solution”

During his keynote, Brandon Dennison, founder of Coalfield Development, delivered a powerful insight:

“As a social enterprise, you need to fall in love with the problem, not the solution.”

This principle is at the heart of Future Plans’ work. We don’t chase quick fixes or one-size-fits-all answers. Instead, we dig deep into the root causes of workforce challenges—skills gaps, lack of career navigation, and barriers to training—and design solutions that evolve as communities change.

Learning from Coalfield Development

Coalfield Development is a national leader in social enterprise, driving economic revitalization in West Virginia through innovative workforce and community projects. Their success demonstrates the power of leveraging federal funding streams to amplify impact—a strategy Future Plans is eager to explore and share. By connecting with Coalfield and other leaders, we aim to build funding models that strengthen our ability to serve Ohio and beyond.

Themes That Shape Our Approach

The ACOSE conference reinforced several strategies that Future Plans is already integrating into our work:

  • Unlikely Partnerships: One breakout session highlighted a law firm donating office space for an environmental light show—a creative example of how unconventional alliances can spark community engagement. Future Plans actively seeks similar partnerships to expand our reach and impact.
  • Measure Impact Early: The Ohio University Department of Public Policy emphasized the importance of gathering feedback upfront. Their methodology for valuing community engagement aligns with our commitment to data-driven decision-making, ensuring that every initiative delivers measurable results.
  • Community-Centered Innovation: We see social enterprise as a people-first approach to solving community challenges. It’s not just about creating programs—it’s about designing solutions that start with individuals and their unique strengths, then scale to benefit entire communities. The social enterprise model prioritizes the building of systems that prioritize people while creating financial resilience to keep transforming communities for years to come.

Why Future Plans Is Investing in Social Enterprise

Our vision is clear: to create collaborations where education, workforce development, and community well-being intersect to generate community solutions that are self-sustaining and deeply rooted in solving real problems.

By embracing social enterprise principles, Future Plans is solving community problems with an eye for sustainability. Together with partners like Coalfield Development, we are building a movement that transforms communities from the inside out.
