From “Senior Without a Plan” to a Welding Career

How career assessment, coaching, and hands-on training helped one Ashtabula County student move from uncertainty to employment, college credit, and a welding career.

The Opportunity

In Ashtabula County, many students reach senior year with talent, ambition, and questions about what comes next. For Max, a senior at Lakeside High School, the challenge was not a lack of potential. It was the need for a clearer connection between his interests, hands-on strengths, and a career pathway that could lead to further training, employment, and long-term opportunity.

When Max entered his senior year at Lakeside High School, he wanted to build a successful future but hadn’t yet identified the path to get there. Like many students, he needed more than general encouragement. He needed a way to understand his strengths, connect them to real career options, and take a practical next step toward life after high school.

Through Lakeside High School’s partnership with Future Plans and the GRIT Project, Max completed a career assessment and received individualized coaching that helped him better understand his interests, strengths, and possible career directions. That process helped connect Max to the GRIT Summer Welding Bootcamp, where career exploration became hands-on technical training.

The Approach

The GRIT Summer Welding Bootcamp gave Max the opportunity to develop practical welding skills, gain confidence, and earn credentials that could support both employment and continued education. What started as career exploration became a direct pathway into a high-demand field.

The Results

The results were immediate and meaningful. Through the welding bootcamp, Max earned three industry-recognized certifications and secured a job with Hose Master in Euclid, Ohio, gaining a foothold in welding while continuing to build his skills. After more than a year with the company, Max’s continued progress shows how the right training opportunity can lead to lasting career momentum.

Max also enrolled at Lakeland Community College to pursue a welding degree. Because of the training he completed through the bootcamp, he bypassed multiple classes and moved more quickly toward his educational and career goals.

Student Success: Max’s Path to Welding

Max’s journey shows how a connected career pathway can move a student from uncertainty to opportunity. What began as a senior year without a clear plan has become a pathway that combines employment, continued education, and advancement in a field Max is passionate about.

Why It Matters for Ohio

Max’s experience demonstrates the value of connecting career exploration to tangible opportunities. Assessment and coaching can help students discover possibilities, but the greatest impact comes when those insights lead to recognized credentials, meaningful employment, and continued skill development.

For Ohio, this model offers a practical way to strengthen the connection between education and workforce needs. By aligning schools, training providers, employers, and postsecondary institutions, communities can help more students transition from high school into earn-and-learn pathways that support continued education, career advancement, and rising wages.

Future Plans and the GRIT Project help make those connections possible — turning career exploration into a starting point for long-term opportunity.
