East Palestine City Schools: Turning Student Potential into Purposeful Career Pathways
For East Palestine City Schools, preparing students for life after high school means helping them understand not only what they can do, but also who they are, what they value, and where their strengths can take them.
As part of a broader strategy to strengthen college, career, workforce, and military readiness, the district partnered with Future Plans to give students a more personalized approach to career exploration and postsecondary planning.
The partnership is designed to help students move beyond simply choosing a next step. Instead, students are encouraged to understand why a pathway fits their strengths, interests, and goals—and what it will take to get there.
The Approach: A Team Around the Student
The East Palestine–Future Plans partnership is built on a simple premise: schools and community partners are stronger when they work together around the individual student.
East Palestine educators bring deep knowledge of their students, families, school culture, and community. Future Plans brings a structured process that connects self-discovery with career exploration, preparation, and real-world opportunities.
Together, the partners are helping make career readiness a personalized experience rather than a one-size-fits-all exercise.
Through the Future Plans five-step process, students move through:
- Self-Assessment — Identify natural abilities, interests, strengths, and areas of potential.
2. Coaching — Work with a career coach to better understand assessment results and connect them to personal goals.
3. Discovery — Explore careers and pathways that align with students’ skills and interests.
4. Preparation — Understand the education, training, credentials, and experiences required to pursue those pathways.
5. Placement — Take meaningful next steps toward employment, college, training, or another postsecondary opportunity.
The result is a process that helps students connect who they are today with where they want to go tomorrow.
The Results
Since the partnership began, East Palestine City Schools’ College, Career, Workforce and Military Readiness rating has increased 8.5 percentage points, reaching 4 stars on the latest Ohio State Report Card.
That improvement reflects the collective work of the district and its many partners and initiatives. The Future Plans partnership contributes to that broader effort by giving students a structured way to identify their strengths, explore aligned careers, and develop actionable plans for life after high school.
Student Success: Emma’s Path to Nursing
Senior Emma G. provides a compelling example of what the process can look like when career exploration leads to action.
Emma had long been interested in healthcare. Through the Future Plans CNA program, she was able to turn that interest into a concrete career pathway.
She earned her CNA credential and achieved a perfect score on both portions of her state certification exam. She then secured a CNA position at Hampton Woods Nursing Center, giving her the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the healthcare field while still preparing for her future.
Her next step is already taking shape. Emma has been accepted into Youngstown State University’s nursing program, where she plans to continue her education with the long-term goal of becoming a nurse practitioner. She is also saving money for college while gaining experience in the field she hopes to make her career.
Emma’s journey illustrates the power of connecting the dots:
Interest → Exploration → Credential → Work Experience → Postsecondary Education → Career Goal
Rather than waiting until after graduation to discover whether healthcare was right for her, Emma was able to test her interests, gain a credential, experience the workplace, and make a more informed decision about her future while still in high school.
Why This Matters
Emma’s story is one student’s experience, but it represents a larger opportunity for schools across Ohio.
Students should not have to wait until after graduation to begin figuring out whether a career is right for them. With the right support, they can identify their strengths, explore careers that align with their interests, earn industry-recognized credentials, gain real-world experience, and make informed decisions about college, training, employment, or other postsecondary pathways before they leave high school.
For East Palestine City Schools and Future Plans, the goal is not simply to help students choose a destination.
It is to help them understand themselves well enough to choose a direction—and give them the tools, experiences, and support to move confidently toward it.
