At a recent Reimagine Appalachia Online Summit Conference, a breakout session on “Storytelling with an Investment Approach,” communications experts and community development leaders explored a critical question: How can Appalachian communities position themselves to attract private capital through compelling narratives? The discussion underscored a powerful truth—stories matter, especially when they demonstrate momentum, local leadership, and measurable impact.
Why Storytelling Is Central to Investment
Panelists emphasized that investors are drawn to evidence of progress and potential. They want to see:
- Momentum: Examples of funded pilot projects, small business expansions, or community-led initiatives.
- Credibility: A strong track record, local buy-in, and governance structures that reduce risk.
- Impact Metrics: Jobs created or retained, workforce readiness, and demand signals such as letters of intent or supply chain gaps.
As the expert panel noted, “Investors respond differently when they see local leadership and long-term stewardship built into a project. Communities that present themselves as co-architects of growth—not recipients of rescue—attract capital that respects local control.”
Language Matters
The session highlighted the need to shift from philanthropic language to investment language. Instead of framing Appalachia as a region of hardship, storytellers should lead with assets and opportunity:
- High concentrations of manufacturers and farmers signal practical skills and production capacity.
- Stable communities and strong local institutions reduce operational risk.
- Underutilized sites like brownfields and former coal plants represent redevelopment potential.
This reframing positions Appalachia as a region of resilience and innovation, not dependency.
Future Plans: Aligning Mission with Investment-Oriented Storytelling
At Future Plans, we share this vision. Our mission—ending poverty one individual at a time—is rooted in empowering people through career assessment, coaching, and placement. But achieving systemic change requires more than passion; it demands strategic storytelling that resonates with funders and investors.
Like the Appalachian communities discussed in the session, Future Plans leverages evidence-based impact:
- Thousands of individuals assessed and coached through our five-step process: Assess, Coach, Discover, Prepare, Place.
- Documented outcomes in workforce readiness and job placement.
- Partnerships with schools, businesses, and community organizations that demonstrate scalability and sustainability.
We also embrace the principle of local leadership and long-term value. Our programs are designed to strengthen communities by equipping individuals with skills that align with in-demand careers—creating a ripple effect of economic stability and growth.
Good Storytelling is Imperative
As dashboard elements evolve, Future Plans is keeping its user guides digital to ensure agility and relevance. Future Plans’ approach to storytelling mirrors the session’s emphasis on adaptability and multimedia. Authentic, accessible narratives—whether through our video testimonials, data-driven reports, or interactive dashboards—help funders understand our mission and the opportunity we see to help our communities.

The Call to Action
The breakout session closed with a powerful reminder: “Don’t lead with need; lead with potential.” For Future Plans, that means telling stories that showcase transformation—individuals moving from uncertainty to career confidence, communities building pathways to prosperity, and funders becoming partners in a movement to eradicate poverty.
By framing our impact in terms of return on investment—social and economic—we invite funders to join us in creating lasting change. Because when one individual rises, an entire community moves forward.
In our upcoming GRIT Days of Learning Conference: Playbook for Progress, we will be holding a breakout session featuring The Impact Storytelling Lab with Jake Ross, MSW, LISW-S.
